Supporting LGBTQ+ Teens Living with Depression and Anxiety
Zoom workshop facilitated by Helen Staab, LICSW (she/Her)
In this 3 hour virtual workshop, child and family therapist Helen Staab will provide a framework for understanding, interacting with, and supporting your teenager’s mental health. We will learn about the ways that depression and anxiety function, how holding a queer identity might impact a young person’s experience of mental illness, and what we as parents can do to support our young people.
Participants in this workshop will have the option of participating in an ongoing support group for parents of LGBTQ+ teens living with depression and anxiety. Participants from any location are welcome in both the workshop and the support group.
COST: $90/person, or $170 for 2 people.
Lower payment tiers are available. See Payment Instructions & Tips for details.
About the Presenter
Helen Staab (pronouns: she/her/hers) is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with a Master’s Degree in Clinical Social Work from Simmons College. Helen has been working at SAYFTEE since the fall of 2020, where she does individual, family, and group therapy with all ages. She facilitates SAYFTEE's Queer Resilience Group for adolescents and regularly runs workshops for parents and caregivers of adolescents living with depression and anxiety.
In therapeutic practice, Helen uses a strengths based and client centered approach integrating her background in child development, family systems, and narrative therapy. Her experience working with multi-stressed families combined with training in conflict transformation allow Helen to approach family work with compassion and empathy. Humor and fun are a crucial part of the therapeutic process for Helen, and she enjoys developing creative individualized activities and interventions. Helen is experienced in supporting young LGBTQ+ and their parents through experiences of depression, anxiety, self injury and suicidal ideation.
As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Helen is passionate about providing queer and gender affirming therapy. A critical part of this work is striving to appreciate the ways in which clients may be impacted by capitalism, white supremacy, ableism, and other forms of systemic oppression. Mental health concerns do not occur in a vacuum, and a social justice and abolitionist lens is an important element of Helen's practice.
